Milazzo Sacra

“Milazzo Sacra”, taking its title from the work by Abbot Perdichizzi, is a project dedicated to promoting and sharing the artistic heritage preserved in the city's churches.

The initiative, promoted by Italia Nostra in collaboration with SiciliAntica and with the patronage of the local ecclesiastical community, involves the installation of descriptive plaques beside paintings, altar frontals, sculptures and other works of particular historical and artistic interest. Its aim is to make a heritage that is often little known, yet of extraordinary value, more accessible and understandable to both residents and visitors.

“Milazzo Sacra” stems from the desire to combine conservation with knowledge, providing simple yet effective tools for reading and interpreting works of art within their original settings. The plaques, written in clear and rigorous language and complemented by multilingual QR codes, will guide visitors on a journey of discovery that brings together history, art and spirituality.

The project forms part of Italia Nostra's broader commitment to safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage, with particular attention to involving younger generations and schools, so that they may become active participants in discovering and protecting their own local heritage.

Through “Milazzo Sacra”, the city's churches thus become storytelling places, capable of conveying stories of artists, traditions and devotion, while helping to strengthen the bond between the local community and its cultural heritage.

The initiative began on 12 April 2025 with a presentation on the Lenten cloth and a visit to the artworks in the Duomo of Santo Stefano. It continues in 2026 with the unveiling of the information plaques and will gradually be extended to other religious buildings throughout the city, creating a genuine distributed itinerary of sacred art, freely accessible to everyone.
